History

In the past it was known as Khandakas or Kandia and was conquered many times as the great walls around it indicate.

It is a vibrant, busy, modern, cosmopolitan city that has welcomed many cultures over the centuries and will not disappoint the visitor.

It is the administrative, technological and commercial center of Crete.

The modern part of the city is outside the city walls and all the attractions are located

around the center and from the harbor where the famous Venetian castle of Koules (Rocca a Mare) is located.

There are many places of interest for visitors, such as the historic center of Heraklion, where you can walk

and see Venetian heritage buildings such as the Loggia, St. Mark’s Basilica,

which now serves as the Municipal Gallery, the Lion Square with Morosini’s fountain.
The visitor can wander in the local market of Heraklion which is nearby

and in the nearby square of Eleftheria, where the world-famous exhibit of Knossos is located,

the Archaeological Museum. The Cathedral of Agios Minas and the Church of Agios Titos are favorite destinations among tourists.

Heraklion also offers amazing nightlife and a great shopping experience
